Why We Created Our Southsea Collection: A Little Love Letter to Our Seaside Home
There is something about Southsea that is difficult to explain to someone who has never lived here.
Perhaps it is the sound of the sea when you walk along the promenade, the familiar sight of the beach on a windy afternoon, or the feeling that there is always something happening somewhere along our little stretch of the Hampshire coast. Maybe it is the independent shops, the colourful characters, the history tucked into our streets or simply the fact that, whatever the weather is doing, we are never very far from the sea.
For us at Little Bee Soap Co, Southsea is more than the place where we make soap. It is part of our identity.
That is why we created our Southsea Collection: a range of handmade soaps inspired by the place we call home, the stories that make it special and the people who bring it to life.
We wanted to create something that felt personal. Something that could be enjoyed by someone who has lived here all their life, someone who has just moved to the area or someone visiting Portsmouth and looking for a gift that means a little more than an ordinary souvenir.
Because Southsea deserves to be celebrated.
A soapery inspired by Southsea
Little Bee Soap Co is an independent soapery based in Southsea, Portsmouth. We make traditional cold-process soap by hand, using carefully selected oils, butters and other ingredients to create bars that are as thoughtful in their formulation as they are in their appearance.
We have always believed that the things we make should have a story behind them.
Our wider collection is inspired by nature, botanicals, traditional craftsmanship and the little details that make everyday routines feel special. But we also wanted to create a collection that was rooted firmly in our own corner of the world.
It seemed only right to celebrate the place where our business is growing.
Southsea has its own character. It is seaside without being polished and predictable, full of history without feeling stuck in the past, and home to a creative community that gives the area so much of its personality.
We wanted our soaps to reflect some of that spirit.
The Southsea Collection is our way of bringing a little piece of home into something practical, beautifully made and easy to share.
More than a souvenir: celebrating Portsmouth's local identity
When people think about Portsmouth, there are certain landmarks that immediately come to mind. The city's maritime history, its historic waterfront and the familiar sights along the seafront all contribute to a strong sense of place.
Southsea has a story of its own, too.
Southsea Castle was built in 1544 as part of the coastal defences protecting the approaches to Portsmouth Harbour. It has witnessed centuries of change, and its position beside the sea remains a reminder of how closely Portsmouth's identity is connected to the water. (Portsmouth Heritage Explorer)
Southsea Common tells another part of the story. Today, it is a familiar open space for walks, gatherings and time outdoors, but it developed into pleasure grounds during the nineteenth century as Southsea grew as a seaside resort. (Historic England)
These places are not simply attractions to tick off a visitor's itinerary. They are part of the backdrop to everyday life here.
They are where people meet friends, take their children, walk the dog, enjoy the sunshine when it finally appears and make memories that become part of their own Portsmouth story.
That is what we love about creating products inspired by a real place. There is a connection that goes beyond the object itself.
A gift inspired by Southsea can remind somebody of a favourite walk, a family holiday, a wedding by the coast or the place they grew up. It can also introduce someone new to the area and give them a reason to discover a little more about it.
We want our Southsea Collection to capture some of that feeling.
Why handmade soap?
You might wonder why we chose soap as our way of celebrating Southsea.
The answer is quite simple: it is what we love making.
Soap is one of those everyday objects that is easy to overlook. We use it without thinking very much about where it came from, how it was made or what went into it.
We wanted to approach it differently.
Traditional cold-process soap making gives us the opportunity to create our own formulations from individual oils and butters. Rather than relying on a ready-made soap base, we carefully measure and combine our ingredients, pour the soap into moulds and allow the bars time to cure.
It is a slower process, and that is part of the appeal.
We can think about the ingredients, the fragrance, the appearance and the overall experience we want each bar to offer. We can create something that feels considered rather than mass-produced.
For our Southsea Collection, that craftsmanship meets local inspiration.
The result is a product that can be used and enjoyed, rather than something that simply sits on a shelf collecting dust. It makes a thoughtful gift for visitors, a little treat for a local friend or a reminder of home for somebody who has moved away.
We think there is something lovely about giving an everyday essential a sense of place.
A local collection made with our values in mind
Celebrating Southsea would feel incomplete if we ignored the things that matter to us as a business.
At Little Bee Soap Co, we care about ingredient sourcing, animal welfare, biodiversity and reducing unnecessary waste. We want to build a business that takes its responsibilities seriously, even when that means doing things more slowly or putting extra thought into a decision.
Where possible, we choose organic ingredients and work with suppliers who can provide information about how their products are sourced and produced.
Our ingredient choices include organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic extra virgin olive oil, organic castor oil and shea butter produced traditionally by a women's co-operative in Ghana.
These ingredients come from different parts of the world, and we believe it is important to be honest about that. Being a Southsea business does not mean every raw material we use can be grown locally. Instead, we focus on making considered choices about the ingredients available to us and the suppliers behind them.
We also think about how we present our products and how we can reduce unnecessary packaging.
For us, sustainability is not a label we can simply stick on a product and forget about. It involves asking questions, learning more and making improvements wherever we reasonably can.
The Southsea Collection brings together two things we care about: celebrating our local community and making products with care.
We hope it gives customers another reason to support a small independent business while enjoying something useful and thoughtfully made.
Supporting independent businesses and celebrating our community
One of the things we love most about running a small business is being part of a wider community of people who care about what they do.
Independent businesses bring individuality to our high streets and neighbourhoods. They offer different ideas, personal service and products that often have a story behind them.
We believe there is room for more than one of us to succeed.
At Little Bee Soap Co, we are passionate about collaboration over competition, particularly when it comes to supporting other female-founded businesses and independent makers.
A strong local community benefits everyone. When people discover a small business, recommend a local maker or choose a thoughtfully produced gift over something generic, they help keep creativity and independent enterprise alive.
Our Southsea Collection is a small contribution to that wider picture.
We want people to discover our soaps, of course, but we also hope the collection encourages them to explore the area, visit independent shops and appreciate the people who make Southsea such an interesting place to live and visit.
There is so much creativity here, and we think it deserves to be celebrated.
A gift from Southsea, whether you live here or are just visiting
We wanted the Southsea Collection to appeal to more than one kind of customer.
Perhaps you are a local who wants to support a small business on your doorstep. Maybe you are looking for a Portsmouth-themed gift for a friend who has moved away. You might be visiting Southsea for a weekend and want to take home something that feels connected to the place rather than another generic souvenir.
Or perhaps you simply love handmade soap and enjoy discovering the story behind the products you buy.
Whatever brings you to the collection, we hope there is something that makes you smile.
A locally inspired soap can be a thoughtful little gift for a birthday, a thank-you, a wedding favour or a care package for someone who misses home. It can also be a simple way to remember a favourite place long after a visit has ended.
We believe gifts are often more meaningful when there is a story behind them.
And what better story than a product made by a small soapery in the seaside community that inspired it?
Our Southsea story is still being written
We are proud to be building Little Bee Soap Co in Southsea.
Like many small businesses, we are learning as we go, developing our products, meeting new people and discovering opportunities that we could not have imagined when we first began.
The Southsea Collection is part of that journey. It allows us to bring our love of traditional soap making together with our appreciation for the place we call home.
We know that no single collection can capture everything that makes Southsea special. Its character comes from its history, its changing seafront, its independent businesses, its creative community and, above all, the people who live here.
But we can celebrate a little of it in our own way.
So, whether you have called Southsea home for decades or have only just discovered it, thank you for being part of the story.
We hope our collection reminds you of the sea air, the familiar streets, the history and the little moments that make this place special.
And if you happen to be holding one of our soaps while reading this, we hope you enjoy it.
